About the Password Generator
Weak and reused passwords are the most common way accounts get hacked. The Password Generator creates long, random passwords that are very hard to guess, so you can use a different one for every account.
Choose the length and the types of characters you want. A strength meter shows how hard the password would be to crack.
How to use the Password Generator
- Move the slider to choose the password length. At least 14 characters is a good start.
- Tick the character types you want to include.
- Press Generate password for a new one.
- Press Copy password and save it in a password manager.
How it works
The tool uses your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, the same source used for encryption, rather than the weaker random function used for games. It guarantees at least one character from each type you selected and then shuffles the result. The strength meter estimates entropy in bits from the length and the size of the character set.
The password is created on your device. It is not stored, logged or sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a password be?
Length matters most. Aim for at least 14 characters for normal accounts and 20 or more for important ones such as email and banking.
Is it safe to generate passwords online?
It is safe here because the password is created in your browser and never transmitted. Even so, store it in a trusted password manager and never share it.
Should I include symbols?
Symbols add strength, but some websites do not accept all of them. If a site rejects your password, turn symbols off and increase the length instead.
