About the Discount Calculator
The Discount Calculator tells you how much a sale will really cost. Enter the original price and the discount percentage to see your savings and the final price, and add a tax rate if tax is charged on top.
A second calculator works backwards. If you know the original price and the sale price, it finds the percentage discount, which is useful for comparing offers from different shops.
How to use the Discount Calculator
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the discount percentage and, if needed, the tax percentage.
- Press Calculate price to see what you save and what you pay.
- To find a discount from two prices, use the second calculator and enter the original and sale prices.
How it works
The amount saved is the price multiplied by the discount percentage and divided by 100. The discounted price is the original price minus the savings. If tax applies, it is calculated on the discounted price and added to give the final total. The discount percentage from two prices is the difference between them, divided by the original price, multiplied by 100.
Frequently asked questions
Is tax applied before or after the discount?
In most shops tax is charged on the discounted price, which is how this tool works. Some regions differ, so check your receipt.
How do I work out two discounts in a row?
Apply them one after the other, not added together. A 20 percent discount followed by 10 percent is a total saving of 28 percent, not 30.
Can I use any currency?
Yes. The calculator works with plain numbers, so enter prices in whatever currency you use.
